Marxism and hegemony

1.They feature left wing ideologies because of their display of the the hardest worker on the street was an illegal immigrant, determined to pay her way and not touch a penny of benefits.  I agree with these critics because the film has a consistency of action throughout and then deteriorates by incorporating meaningless and boring scenes that do not add to the plot.

3. Quintena is seen as a character promoting left ideology because she is a hardworking immigrant who regardless of all her hard work still is disadvantaged and is deported even though she works harder than her British neighbours.

4.The status quo is reinforced in the scene when roger is on the train and also has his laptop displayed on his bed which portrays the idea that in British culture that if you work hard you will do well which is reflected in Rogers extravagant house and car.

Task 2

1.Marx suggested that power was held by a minority (the elite or bourgeoisie) who had

access to capital and could use their money and power to generate more wealth.

2.The fact that Sugar has all the power reinforces the superior position of the capitalist elite therefore he has the power to provide a livelihood of the winner of the competition.

3. Eastenders glamorises working class life because all the working class actors are in a community and although working hard find ways to enjoy themselves and the consistent shot of the supermarkets portrays an image of productivity.However the daily mail demonises working class people because they portrays them as lazy citizens who draining then government taking benefits and failed at getting a good education. Overall, they portray them as failures.

4.Marxism reinforces the ideology that the power of the elite is beneficial to the mass because roger is seen as having a lot of pressure from work which impacts on his family life which is quite miserable and detached whereas the other families have a simple working life but seem to enjoy their family life and seem a lot happier.. This display of glamorising working class subculture may be a from of repression so that the working class do not question the divide and normalise it.

Task 3

1.The casual vacancy incorporates quite a lot of scenes where the working class struggles and agony are exhibited. For example the elements of abuse and violence is displayed quite a lot which shops that working class is not as glamorised as its made out to be.


2.In casual vacancy characters of different ethnic origin are used to promote diversity and also create the ideology that power of the elite do not just effect one minority group but rather effects a large group.The scenes are purposely placed in damp and small houses to show the audience the actual effects of being dominated by the elite has on other social classes which the media tends to provide coverage of.

3.The BBC are willing to delay their shows for films that reinforce the capitalist ideologies whereas the films with left wing ideologies do not get any favours or a later time to air.

4.Daily mail reinforce this  ideologies  by consistently airing the same types of films all the time which normalises it for the audience so that the working class being under the control of the elite is ingrained into the audiences minds.

1.·         The use of slow motion in the opening shot works well in terms of creating drama but does not help in meeting the brief. The slow motion means you lose the continuity editing / match-on-action element that was essential to this brief.

·         The other issue with the slow motion is that the sound is also slowed down which again creates a dramatic effect but does not create the seamless, flowing continuity that this task is aiming for. Here, you probably needed to delete the audio track from the original footage and use a non-diegetic music track before the dialogue begins.

·         The camerawork walking behind the character is very good – steady and well framed. However, you lose the continuity when the character sits down because the other character isn’t there and then magically appears a shot later. The switch from slow motion to normal speed also loses continuity.

·         I really like the close-up shot of the character waiting (hand tapping on table) but you needed a shot of the other character arriving for continuity purposes.

The over-the-shoulder shots are framed OK but try and angle them in a little 

2.It was not shown in class therefore i do not have any feedback from any students.

3.I met two aspects however i did not meet the continuity aspect of the video because a character is not there in one shot and in the next  shot i edited the character to just appear. I also met the expected duration of the video in the brief.

4.I positioned the camera well and i think my match on action was on point on my final film and made the dialogue between the characters more easy and free flowing however the continuity element of the video proved to be really difficult because the narrative did not match it.

5.I found the continuity aspect of editing really hard because with continuity you can not really incorporate other editing styles because it would conflict with the it.

Mise en scence video feedback

·        1. The key problem is that it is not clear from your video or mood board what look you are trying to create – this is an essential aspect of the brief (e.g. pop star, horror film zombie, James Bond etc.)

·         The pace and framing is about right for the video although be aware of what is in the shot (there are distracting elements in the background around the edge of the frame for this video).

·         The other issue is lighting – the video is overexposed which means a lot of the screen is effectively bright white. This in addition creates a graininess to the whole production which significantly lowers production values. This emphasises the importance of choosing the location carefully, checking the lighting and making sure the framing of the shot is just right.

2. This video was not shown in class therefore i did not get any student comments.

3.WWW-I placed the camera in the right position and my editing made the video more free flowing and smooth.

EBI-I didn't choose a suitable setting since there were distracting elements in the background making the video lose its professionalism.


4.The different colours , passion and creativity displayed in the pictures on my mood board of makeups and the art of it inspired me to create an edgy and unique makeup look but also has an element of simplicity.

5.I could choose a better setting and film on a camera so the quality of the video is better and more clear. I could also improve the pace of my editing because my editing was quite fast and was hard too point what sort of editing technique was used. Lastly, i would make my video more lengthy because it  didn't meet the brief time of 1 minute.

6. Mise en scence has a huge effect on the display on of the characters such as costume and makeup which shows the audience what type of character they are based on their style.

1.The guardian review praises capital for showing a sympathetic side to the so called cold-hearted characters who are pro capitalist such as Arabella being touched by Ahmed generosity towards her when she was in need of coriander. However it is criticised for suggesting that no-one has listened to a word Lanchester said.

Trailer analysis

1. Ariel shots are used throughout to express the superiority of London life and to express how busy it is. An armpit shot is also used when Roger is on the train to express how full and busy London transport is. It may aslo show a sense of unity since everyone in London has the same goals which is to workk and earn money.

3.In every 2 mins the producer introduces a new family and focuses on the struggles and hardships each one is facing and then proceeds to show the differences in their lifestyle.



Episode preview

1.This preview has a eery and ominous effect to it since they are secretly being recorded so there is a horror sub genre hinted in this and also the involvement of the police could initiate that there is also a sub genre of crime.

2.It is a state of the nation drama because it captures the lost state of a strong police force since they are taking this major matter very lightly and didn't respond to the victims for a while. It shows how fragmented the police force and how they possibly respond to people differently based on race.

3. Analyse the mise en scene in this clip. How does this provide familiarity for the audience?


4.Since London is a multicultural city most of the audiences would be of an ethnic majority. Therefore, they can relate to Ahmed family mistreatment by the place compared to Roger and Arabella.

5.Capital incorporated a lot of different characters withe differing ethnicities and genders making it easier for the audience to react to the capitalist oof the white majority in comparison to the ethnic minority who hold the status of working class. There are also white working class making it easier for the audience to react when they are mistreated.



Episode 2 preview

1. This clip represents upper middle class family by showing the glamorous and large rich house they live in and also the display of the latest and rich cars.

2.It shows roger and his family living a luxurious and wealthy life and still complaining in comparison to Ahmed family who are not as wealthy but have a good relationship withe each other and are still happy.

3.The audience will feel sympathetic towards Roger because they will view him as a hardworking man who is under the control of Arabella who demands so much money from him.

1.On page 3, they use rhetorical questions and use short snappy sentences to create suspense and make the audience want to figure out the answers.

2.They incorporate the other films that they have produced to show the audience that they are experienced in this field and have made successful films before which will hint to the audience that capital may just be another successful film of theirs and therefore they will be more likely to watch it.

4.He states that  Roger isn’t an evil banker, he’s a slightly complacent banker. He’s become used to a certain way of life and has a self-imposed pressure to live that way. Therefore he isn't completely in charge of his job and his life due to being controlled by Arabella and his German boss.

5.He states that  we’re at a crossroads and a lot of things are slowly happening, socially, economically and culturally. Pepys Road is a manifestation of this. It’s an example of what is happening on a lot of roads in London and Britain.

4.Social-realist films like Chicken document important aspects of British life that rarely feature
in bigger-budget films aimed at commercial success. Thus , resulting in loss of funds and links back to Hesmondalgh idea of risky business such as social realist film have a high chance of failure and loss of funds. Chicken was also Joe Stephenson first film meaning that his lack of experience and knowledge of the marketing business made funding bodies less likely to fund these movies.

5.Social realism offers a portrayal of under-represented or misrepresented groups which is important because it challenges the status quo and informs audience of major social problems that need to  be faced.Chicken adressess issues that the audience need to be informed about to lead to more social changes.

11. The TV drama i will be analysing is casualty. Casualty incorporates ethnic minority characters as the main characters to appease the modern audience. The setting is usually in the hospitals but it differs between two settings which is the hospital and the area where the accident takes place where the paramedic treats the patients which outlines the importance of the senior doctors who are at the hospital and the paramedics who rush to a different setting to threat the patient.

12.I think TV drama will become a tool used by society to represent and normalise developing social ideologies due to the incorporation of more characters that represent these changes in social ideologies . It will be less about creativity and more about appeasing the audience so they can gain more profit.
