capital case study

Reviews and features

1.The guardian review praises capital for showing a sympathetic side to the so called cold-hearted characters who are pro capitalist such as Arabella being touched by Ahmed generosity towards her when she was in need of coriander. However it is criticised for suggesting that no-one has listened to a word Lanchester said.

2.A Polish builder (Radoslaw Kaim) is drawing up a quote for Arabella’s interior design dreams, while a pensioner (Gemma Jones), who has lived her entire life on Pepys Road, is now contemplating death in the house where she was born.

3.In the five things you need to know about capital article, it states that the TV adaptation is set in present day. They state that we may technically be moving out of the recession now, but the bonkers housing market and increasing rate of gentrification across London means that Capital’s ideas still stand.

Trailer analysis

1. Ariel shots are used throughout to express the superiority of London life and to express how busy it is. An armpit shot is also used when Roger is on the train to express how full and busy London transport is. It may aslo show a sense of unity since everyone in London has the same goals which is to workk and earn money.

2.How does the trailer use mise en scene to capture the family element of the drama?

3.In every 2 mins the producer introduces a new family and focuses on the struggles and hardships each one is facing and then proceeds to show the differences in their lifestyle.

Episode preview

1.This preview has a eery and ominous effect to it since they are secretly being recorded so there is a horror sub genre hinted in this and also the involvement of the police could initiate that there is also a sub genre of crime.

2.It is a state of the nation drama because it captures the lost state of a strong police force since they are taking this major matter very lightly and didn't respond to the victims for a while. It shows how fragmented the police force and how they possibly respond to people differently based on race.

3. Analyse the mise en scene in this clip. How does this provide familiarity for the audience?

4.Since London is a multicultural city most of the audiences would be of an ethnic majority. Therefore, they can relate to Ahmed family mistreatment by the place compared to Roger and Arabella.

5.Capital incorporated a lot of different characters withe differing ethnicities and genders making it easier for the audience to react to the capitalist oof the white majority in comparison to the ethnic minority who hold the status of working class. There are also white working class making it easier for the audience to react when they are mistreated.

Episode 2 preview

1. This clip represents upper middle class family by showing the glamorous and large rich house they live in and also the display of the latest and rich cars.

2.It shows roger and his family living a luxurious and wealthy life and still complaining in comparison to Ahmed family who are not as wealthy but have a good relationship withe each other and are still happy.

3.The audience will feel sympathetic towards Roger because they will view him as a hardworking man who is under the control of Arabella who demands so much money from him.

Industries and production context

1. Endemol shine group.

2.It was sold to shine limited for 35 million.

3.They have won the Bafta spy award and produced Miss Petigrew lives for a day and remade hustle, spooks and tsunami.

4. What audience pleasures does the showreel suggests the production offers.

Marketing and promotion

1.On page 3, they use rhetorical questions and use short snappy sentences to create suspense and make the audience want to figure out the answers.

2.They incorporate the other films that they have produced to show the audience that they are experienced in this field and have made successful films before which will hint to the audience that capital may just be another successful film of theirs and therefore they will be more likely to watch it.

3.Ben Stephenson and Charlotte Moore/

4.He states that  Roger isn’t an evil banker, he’s a slightly complacent banker. He’s become used to a certain way of life and has a self-imposed pressure to live that way. Therefore he isn't completely in charge of his job and his life due to being controlled by Arabella and his German boss.

5.He states that  we’re at a crossroads and a lot of things are slowly happening, socially, economically and culturally. Pepys Road is a manifestation of this. It’s an example of what is happening on a lot of roads in London and Britain.

assessment LR

1. WWW- You show some good knowledge of the CSP in question 2 and 3
EBI- revise and learn film regulation -BBFC
EBI- in question 3 you need to focus more on the question and construct more of an argument and look at both sides of question if you can.
LR- see blog

2.1st question - 1/3  didn't incorporate the fact that film is regulated to protect young people from content that may be considered harmful such
as violence, sex/nudity, bad language and matters of taste/decency.

2nd question- 4/6  i DID NOT MENTION THE USE OF A FILM FESTIVAL TO PROMOTE THEIR MOVIE.

3rd QUESTION-4/9  I did not mention how important it is the British film industry offers
opportunities for young stars and directors to make their mark in the industry.

3.Film festival circuit  trailer emphasises social realism and art house element.

4.Social-realist films like Chicken document important aspects of British life that rarely feature
in bigger-budget films aimed at commercial success. Thus , resulting in loss of funds and links back to Hesmondalgh idea of risky business such as social realist film have a high chance of failure and loss of funds. Chicken was also Joe Stephenson first film meaning that his lack of experience and knowledge of the marketing business made funding bodies less likely to fund these movies.

5.Social realism offers a portrayal of under-represented or misrepresented groups which is important because it challenges the status quo and informs audience of major social problems that need to  be faced.Chicken adressess issues that the audience need to be informed about to lead to more social changes.

introduction to TV drama

1.It delivers a story and carries on with this story over a large period of time in different sections called episodes.

2.The Avengers (1961-1969) and Danger
Man (1962-1968) being notable examples. Euston Films, creators of
The Sweeney (1975-1978) and Minder (1979 – 1994),

3.Police Procedural (crime)-crime watch
Medical:-casualty
Period (costume)-downtown abbey
Science-fiction/fantasy-Doctor Who
family-Friday Night Lights
teen-Gossip Girl

4.it distinguishes the importance of characters where one character may be in a location opposed to the other character which allows the drama to develop over a long period of time.

5.Characters in drama have to develop and change to carry the plot. However in TV dramas characters are used now that conform to the societal changes and development to appease the audience such as the presence of more females in TV dramas due to the impact of feminism which attracts a larger audience.

6.Multi strand narrative is when a film is telling the story from several main characters perspectives who all have their own small story lines within the narratives. An example of this is the "one tree hill."

7.Employing a teaser at the beginning to hook and keep the audience watching.

8. Tododrov stated that equilibrium is when everything is in power and is balanced which links back to the beginning of a TV drama series and then the equilibrium is disrupted which could refer to the plot in a TV drama and then equilibrium is maintained again which links to the resolution of TV drama where its all sorted it out.

9.It`s distributor is the BBCI and its running time is usually 50 minutes. It is usually distributed to an audience through trailers and posters.

10.It may become more diverse and targeted toward niche groups. Online programme makers are starting to create more short form content, leading to drama serials that run for much less than 60 minutes and 30 minutes.

11. The TV drama i will be analysing is casualty. Casualty incorporates ethnic minority characters as the main characters to appease the modern audience. The setting is usually in the hospitals but it differs between two settings which is the hospital and the area where the accident takes place where the paramedic treats the patients which outlines the importance of the senior doctors who are at the hospital and the paramedics who rush to a different setting to threat the patient.

12.I think TV drama will become a tool used by society to represent and normalise developing social ideologies due to the incorporation of more characters that represent these changes in social ideologies . It will be less about creativity and more about appeasing the audience so they can gain more profit.

chicken case study

1.£110,000
2.Through investment by individuals (e.g. rich friends/contacts).

3. The chicken budget is a lot cheaper than the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster film and is funded by many different sources whereas the the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster is funded by one stable funding body.

4.The BFI film uses national lottery funds to support UK filmmakers which  attracts a larger audience.

5.The BFI film funding chicken would be risky business because its a social awareness film which is not normalised in the media is not likely to attract a large audience so there is a possibility they wont make much profit from it.

production

1.Chicken was shot outside so producers suffered from issues constant rain and lighting.

2.19

3.The scenes in external locations due to rain and lighting.

Distribution

1.Many of the distributors doubted that chicken wouldn't  attract a large audience and not make any profit and therefore wasn`t worth distributing.

2.New Hampshire film festival ,the Giffoni film festival and the Dublin international film festival.

3.Film festivals are important to secure a distribution deal because they have a large audience that include distributors that are looking for films to distribute so its a good opportunity to show the worth of your film and gain publicity regardless of your budget and have more a of a chance of a distributor willing to invest in the film.

4.May 2016

5.Film subscription service mubi features art house film and chicken comes under this category because it is a typically independent produced and is is outside of the major film system because it addresses social factors that are not normalised in the media.

6. Film 4 challenges status quo and produces innovative content making it the best platform to promote chicken.

7.January 2018

PROMOTION

1.Chicken is a dramatic film so its comes under the genre of drama  which would attract a young audience.

2.The trailer is a commonly used for promotion and is traditional however other films use other marketing methods to promote their films such as television advertisement but due to the chickens low budget it was unable to use these marketisation methods.

3.Mark kemode is a important and admired public figure and his review can attract an audience  and gain publicity for chicken such as his loyal fans who will be more likely to watch the film because their icon promotes it and he does not promote just any films and has a good eye for good films like chicken.

4. How does the Chicken Twitter account create and maintain interest in the film?
It creates interest by posting regular updates on the film and also their consistency of answering fans questions about the film make the audience feel more connected and involved.

5 Who does the Twitter account re-tweet? How does this help to promote the film?
They retweet Florence Pugh tweet who is a huge influencer and person in the media which helps the film because her loyal fans will watch chicken because if their idol is appealed by the chicken they will automatically think that it must be a good film.

6.How does the Chicken Facebook page use images and video content to promote the film?

They use the aesthetic shots of the farm and shots of the main actor smiling which immediately gives the effect that this is a appeasing film that challenges the status quo.

7.) What pages are liked by the Chicken Facebook page? What does this tell you about the film and potential target audience?
Chicken is targeted at an older and open minded audience who want to explore the effects of social influence.

8.The homepage has a subheading in bold letters that states that films that get people talking make people care and they have produced   McKellen: Playing the Part and Random Acts: The Castle.

9.The page immediately incorporates the reviews of others and then insert a trailer at the end , this sort of promotion is simplistic and traditional which is appropriate of a low budget film.

10.There are short snippet videos of the mots significant parts of the movies and show may different aspects to the film such as the  main character cooking and another aspect where he is bruised and beaten and he is crying which will intrigue the audience who will want to know more.

Final reading

1.Nick Lacey found that Hollywood films dominated the american culture and that art-house films were put in the specialised category and were not as popular. This was because they incorporated foreign language and audience didn't appreciate having to read subtitles. Art house films are generally hard to understand and the majority of the audience favour entertaining movies and therefore do not enjoy difficult films that are more based on societal issues and not much entertainment.

2.Audience favour art-house film because it has more of a psychological effect which contributes to changes in the audiences in social life and also changes their viewpoint and insight on the world.

3. Bourdieu theorised that having such cultural competences to read difficult texts have them cultural capital however not all social groups are socialised into cultural capital due lack of elaborated code which led to struggle with reading subtitles.

4. Art-house is for middle class because their cultural capital helps them read subtitles and its for older audiences because it is hard to read and understand and older audiences are skilled at figuring out the purpose and meaning of films due to their intellectual development and are more open to finding addressing social issues that are covered in the media.

5.An older audiences who is interested in westernised films and social awareness films that have an open mindset and willing to develop their ideologies and viewpoints of their social world.

BBFC film regulation

1.The BBFC is the UK's regulator of film and video, providing age ratings such as U, PG and 12A. They are a designated body so have legal powers to rate, and sometimes cut or even reject works.

2. The major decisions are made by the chief executive, president and vice presidents in the BBFC. After they make a decision compliance officers watch the movie and they note details of the general theme or context.Compliance Officers’ reports include a brief synopsis of the work, details of the issues, and an argument in support of the recommended age rating.

3.The issues faced when classifying is based on whether the material is in conflict with the law, whether the material  may cause any harm at the age rating concerned, whether there is a conflict in access to media product, and lastly whether the presentation and sex and violence in the movie is appropriate for the audience.

4.Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?

a: It  gained a lot of media coverage because the audience  thought the violence was too strong to be contained at that category. However i do not agree with it getting the certificate because it is unethical and exposes a young age range to violence which may have a major psychological effect.

5.There are dangerous behaviour, discrimination, drugs, language, nudity and sex and violence.

6.Chicken was rated 15 due to the incorporation of very strong language, strong violence, sex references which is not appropriate for a younger age because some of the scenes have a psychological effect and exposure to these scenes have more of an effect on a younger audience because they are more influential.
