editing blog task

THE BIRDS 1968

In the beginning the main character switches her attention to the window where the sounds of birds squawking can be heard however the camera does not pan to what has captivated her attention to create tension and suspense since this focus on just the women rather than what she is looking at instills curiosity in the audience. The sound audio used in this scene fits well with camera movement and editing . This is portrayed when the woman yells 'look' the camera immediately jump cuts to what she is looking at which makes the audience feel involved since they feel like they are being addressed by the women due to the camera movements following and matching the narrative. When the men rush out of the building there is continuity throughout since the camera follows their movement from when they run out of the building to where they station at to help the man who was supposedly attacked by the birds. This method of continuity editing conveys a positive effect on the audience since it portrays how each of the events in the storyline are in order and are organised and may indicate this terror of the characters may continue throughout with reoccurring attacks from the birds who will carry this plot. Moreover the camera continues to jump cut from the men who are helping the attacked man and the characters in the building to focus on the facial expressions and reactions of the characters to the gruesome scence thats about to unfold. The camera zooms in and focuses on the spreading water on the floor which indicates that a fire blow-up scene is about to unfold which captivates the focus of the audience because they are aware of the explosion scene that is about to occur. The consistent spreading of the water is purposely made to have a long duration build up tension and suspense which creates a positive effect on the audience since this intrigues them         resulting in the audience wanting to see what will happen next.

once again the sound audio matches the camera movement when the women points out the man's cigar which is then zoomed in and focused on with the camera. When the explosion takes place there is a juxtaposition between the fire and the water since water represents the purity of the characters and this fire could indicate that some characters may have lost their purity and good nature and may side along with the evil surrounding the birds. The camera follows the eye view of the main character to make sure the audience are following up the order of events and are capturing everything that is happening in the hectic fire blow up scene. A dissolve takes place as the up close shot of the blowup scene is replaced with a crane shot to give the audience and overall and clear landscape of the effect this event has on all other members of the town who seem to be rushing towards or away from the scene in panic which gives a more universal view in comparison to the up close shot. This up close shot that dominates most of the scene  gives the audience an emotional connection to the characters since they are able to see their expressions and reactions clearly however when switched  to the crane shot it does not switch back to the constant up close shot which may represent the characters loss sense of emotion posture tragic event. The crane shot gives us a view o the birds perspective and view which makes the judge of characters seem less biased since the audience get to see both sides of the storyline. The pace of editing speeds up during the blowup where the camera moves from the characters reactions to the blow up scene  consistently and then dissolves into a crane shot which could indicate that there is an atmosphere of terror and chaos evolving. When the scene is about to end there is a brief Montague which shows the aftermaths of the scene from the crane shot where the birds are at the same level of the camera above everyone which may represent their dominance and defeat over the characters. Moreover the creator uses incorporates sound audio of the wind only and blocks out all the other sound to create a peaceful atmosphere after all the chaos that took place which signals to the audience that the havoc is over and the main characters have been defeated by the birds who wreaked havoc on them.

[1 2 and 3.].In this opening scene a lot of closeups are incorporated such as the closeup of the 4 girls faces to signify their facial impressions to give the audience a clearer image of their reaction to Wildens death. The background is faded to outline the image of the 4 girls to signify their importance in the series which makes the audience focus on them. The camera zooms in on the church doors to create suspense to intrigue the audience and may make the audience want the camera to reveal the dead body inside. Long shots are used to when the girls are walking away to create more of an effect and a dramatic exit. The medium closeups indicate that the setting has small space and is a dull setting that isn't usually extravaganised with long shots to show the whole landscape.

Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones (2011)
3.In this TV still , Danereys Taegryn is sitting on a rock looking into outer space and looks like she is in a deep space of thought. There is a closeup of her face to outline her features and make her facial expressions more prominent to the narrative. There is a small nose bridge indicating that there is small space and could indicate that it she is an introvert.

In this TV still , the camera does a closeup of the man in front signifying his importance and long shot is used to show the wide landscape of the rest of the characters and the setting. An establishing shot is used to build ambiance and may be indicating the plot of the media text is upcoming which creates suspense.

Rami Malek in Mr. Robot (2015)

In this tv still , medium closeup is used to outline the distraught expression of the man. The medium closeup also shows the landscape of the setting to alert the audience of where this is taking place. A close shot is is used so the characters emotions and facial features can dictate the text and so the audience can form a personal connection to the character through the close shot of the emotions presented on the characters face.

practical task

At the beginning of this video I used a long shot to show the wider scale of my garden to create a clearer image. As I got closer to the greenery I used a dolly shot to guide the audience throughout the different shots. I then extended the camera and used medium and closeup shots to prevent shocking the audience and make it easier to to guess what will happen next in the scence. I used the long shot in the beginning to create suspense and tension since the wide scale showed the dark atmosphere. The closeup of the plants outlines their details and features which is more effective and prevents the audience from seeing what else is happening in the scene which creates a sense of mystery.

sound blog task

1. Funny games-The director uses opera music which comes under the classic genre of music which could indicate that they are a graceful and traditional family who are quite intact with their old school side. Opera is usually used to calm anxiety and worries which may hint that there will be some conflict that will interfere with this peace of mind.

A clockwork orange- In this contrapuntal sound is used since music of the classical genre is used for a brutal and violent scene which is unusual. The director purposely used classical music to the brutal scene to create comedic effect and drive the audiences attention away from the bloodshed taking place which makes it less horrific.

Life on Mars- In life on mars old school sci fi music is used to establish that this is set in the past era which juxtaposes with the actors knowledge of present state affairs which indicates there is an essence of time travel. Non diegetic sound is used to surprise the audience and create a comedic effect.

Once upon a time in the West- Diegetic sound is used to block out all other sounds to get the focus of the audience and may signify an important part in the narrative. The repetitive buzzing sound builds up tension and suspense of what the next part of the narrative has to bring. There is a sound bridge is when  you can hear the footsteps of the actor in the scene of the actor in the rocking chair.

Once upon a time in America-The ringing sound is diegetic and the music in the background is non diegetic. The ringing sound of the telephone creates a sound bridge over to the scene of the dead bodies which interlinks the sick man in the nursing home and the dead bodies since they both go under the category of tragedies.

2. In this scene the sound is contrapuntal since upbeat and happy music is used although the actors setting is a funeral and are clearly in despair after their confrontation with the police officer. A sound bridge is used when the music carries on when the camera takes shots of the church. The ringing sound of the telephone is diegetic which is used to drag the focus of the audience away from other sounds and the single ringing sound above the silence creates suspense and tension.

sound video feedback and LR

students WWW and EBI

WWW;very well done . Good choice of music and followed brief really well and great transition.
EBI; music cut at the end

WWW; Love how the music goes really well with the scene.
EBI; At the end the music cuts off.

www;Good use of parallell sound.
EBI; maybe transition more clearly

Teachers response;
Opening works very well as parallel-using a music video from as genre as distinct as country music is a great choice.
The contrapuntal aspect also works although better as the video proceeds[the initial switch is perhaps sudden a shock as it could be ] exactly a minute and clearly meets the brief.

What I could do better; I could've made the transition between the two videos more vivid.
I could've also made the two videos more equal  and made them 50 seconds each.

sound work

Sound Practical

Faisa and I took these videos of YouTube and made the soundtrack a country genre and it continued on  to and r and b video which wouldn't usually have the backtracking of country music making it a contrapuntal sound and the music is a diegetic sound.

poster analysis

Low key lighting is used to create an ominous and eery effect. It also defines the characters features to emphasise the importance of the characters. This is of a sci fi genre which is portrayed by the high tech weans the characters are using which they usually use n sci fi. the characters have pale and simple makeup which portrays the simplicity of the movie since every sc fi consist of a villain and hero. Each character is placed next to a beam of light to contrast and compare the difference in lighting .
Image result for scary movie 2

Image result for sin cityIn scary movie 2 high key lighting is used which really defines the characters and makes the image really clear. The background is really dark in contrast to the characters wearing really bright colours which makes the characters stand out. Their makeup is quite bold and really defines their features. There is a lot of distance between them and the camera creating a lot of free space. This poster may be trying to portray a horror comedy since the characters all have comedic expressions on their faces. This fits into the comedic genre and may be aimed at young teenagers.

In Sin City under lighting is used to cast a shadow on the characters. The poster is ironic due to the title since the background is gloomy and dark which is usually the representation of sins. All the characters are holding some sort of gun at someone and may be trying to commit murder which is seen as a major sin which also refers to the title. There is a small distance between the characters and the camera making it more effective. The camera is shot from below to make the characters look more superior and in control. This fits into action and horror genre and may be aimed at older teenager since the scences may be quite explicit.

Image result for pirates of the caribbean

In this poster of the pirates of the Caribbean, the camera uses a close up to express the deathly emotions on the characters face. The creator has used props such as a bandana and a old traditional to portray the pirate genre.  A blue colour is used in the background in contrast to the sea which is where usually pirates sail on to create a better image[imagery]. This is of the wild west genre and must be aimed at older teenagers.

Low key lighting is used to define thee silhouette and create an ominous setting. The character is purposely faced away from the camera to create tension and suspense which is usually used in horror genre. The creator purposely used white snow to contrast with the dark surroundings. The bold font in in which may be trying to indicate violence and danger. The buildings are all based at a far distance and are all symmetrical and look the same apart from one building that has smoke rising out of it which might indicate that the character in the shot set something on fire and explain their immense distance from the setting. I think this is in the horror genre and may be aimed at older adults since it is quite complex.

Related image
The title is quite ironic and is used to create a comedic theme since it says "I am not scared" although the child's expression on his face shows that he is really scared .Underlighting is used  to create a shadow on the childs face indicating that they may be something he is afraid of down there and also makes his features less visible which creates mystery and suspense. The camera takes the shot from below the character to make the character seem more superior. The blue sky in contrast to the dark hole suggests that the character may be looming in between his evil persona and his good persona. "I'm not scared" may be referring to the child being scared to face his dark side. This movie may be aimed at young kids to help them get over their fears and I think that it must be an action genre.

Image result for bride and prejudicecre
The title has a direct link to the the characters. The characters may be an interracial couple wich may be why they recieve "prejudice" from society. The camera is zoomed in on the the two characters to signify their importance. The background juxtaposes the title since bright colours are used to represent glory and create a happy theme which is not usually is used to represent prejudice. The man seems quite proud of himself since he is looking above whereas the women seems to be quite serious and humble. This could be due to the racial differences and difference in class systems. However the confetti in the background indicate celebration which could mean she they are celebrating conquering their racial differences. I think this is a Bollywood musical genre and  may be aimed at young adults.

Image result for million dollar baby In this poster ,low key lighting is used to create suspense and mystery. All three characters arent facing the camera which may indicate that they are all concentrating on the danger that is coming their way. Their facial expressions show how concentrated and determined  they are and the different camera angles of each character may be trying to portray their different personas and how they each must be fighting a different evil
. All of them are dressed in different attire and styles which could be trying to send out the message that opposites attract. I think the genre may action and that it is aimed at teenagers.

E:\My docs\My Pictures\Film Stills\macbeth_rgb.jpg
low key lighting is used to create a dark and mysterious atmosphere which makes the actor camouflage with the background . The creator purposely uses under lighting to show a part of the character implying that the creator only wants us to show certain parts of him so the character appears mysterious.

MISE EN SCENE BLOG TASK

Image result for STILL IMAGE FROM INSIDIOUS
In this insidous still image there is a dark background to create an ominous and eery effect. However there is key lighting that is focused on the actors to stress the importance of the characters over the settings. this dark effect is used to focus the attention on the actors. Both characters makeups such as the grey tone on their faces is to emphasise struggle and fear. Both actors are sharing one prop which is the lantern which casts a shadow on their faces to make the actors visible but also to create mystery.
In this scence there is a dark background and it is quite dim . The rain is used to create a sense of misery and horror. The makeup used on the clown is quite distinctive in the sense that it is really visible and creates a clown effect. Throughout this scene the boy is consistently a large depth and space away from the clown. It is purposely set in the evening to portray the horror effect.

In this scene the makeup is has a great effect. the superheroes have blood and dirt specked over their faces to emphasise the agony they are feeling. The backtracking makes it more motivating and creates a hero effect. The setting thats based on the mountains and high skyscrapers portrays the ability of the heros and how high they can fly. All characters are at a good distance away from the camera throughout this scene.
