THE BIRDS 1968
In the beginning the main character switches her attention to the window where the sounds of birds squawking can be heard however the camera does not pan to what has captivated her attention to create tension and suspense since this focus on just the women rather than what she is looking at instills curiosity in the audience. The sound audio used in this scene fits well with camera movement and editing . This is portrayed when the woman yells 'look' the camera immediately jump cuts to what she is looking at which makes the audience feel involved since they feel like they are being addressed by the women due to the camera movements following and matching the narrative. When the men rush out of the building there is continuity throughout since the camera follows their movement from when they run out of the building to where they station at to help the man who was supposedly attacked by the birds. This method of continuity editing conveys a positive effect on the audience since it portrays how each of the events in the storyline are in order and are organised and may indicate this terror of the characters may continue throughout with reoccurring attacks from the birds who will carry this plot. Moreover the camera continues to jump cut from the men who are helping the attacked man and the characters in the building to focus on the facial expressions and reactions of the characters to the gruesome scence thats about to unfold. The camera zooms in and focuses on the spreading water on the floor which indicates that a fire blow-up scene is about to unfold which captivates the focus of the audience because they are aware of the explosion scene that is about to occur. The consistent spreading of the water is purposely made to have a long duration build up tension and suspense which creates a positive effect on the audience since this intrigues them resulting in the audience wanting to see what will happen next.
once again the sound audio matches the camera movement when the women points out the man's cigar which is then zoomed in and focused on with the camera. When the explosion takes place there is a juxtaposition between the fire and the water since water represents the purity of the characters and this fire could indicate that some characters may have lost their purity and good nature and may side along with the evil surrounding the birds. The camera follows the eye view of the main character to make sure the audience are following up the order of events and are capturing everything that is happening in the hectic fire blow up scene. A dissolve takes place as the up close shot of the blowup scene is replaced with a crane shot to give the audience and overall and clear landscape of the effect this event has on all other members of the town who seem to be rushing towards or away from the scene in panic which gives a more universal view in comparison to the up close shot. This up close shot that dominates most of the scene gives the audience an emotional connection to the characters since they are able to see their expressions and reactions clearly however when switched to the crane shot it does not switch back to the constant up close shot which may represent the characters loss sense of emotion posture tragic event. The crane shot gives us a view o the birds perspective and view which makes the judge of characters seem less biased since the audience get to see both sides of the storyline. The pace of editing speeds up during the blowup where the camera moves from the characters reactions to the blow up scene consistently and then dissolves into a crane shot which could indicate that there is an atmosphere of terror and chaos evolving. When the scene is about to end there is a brief Montague which shows the aftermaths of the scene from the crane shot where the birds are at the same level of the camera above everyone which may represent their dominance and defeat over the characters. Moreover the creator uses incorporates sound audio of the wind only and blocks out all the other sound to create a peaceful atmosphere after all the chaos that took place which signals to the audience that the havoc is over and the main characters have been defeated by the birds who wreaked havoc on them.
