statement of intent

The song I will use in my video is J Coles “snow on the bluff” which is a convention of the Hip hop genre which focuses on the aspect of black lives matter which is  the direction I want to take my music video in . I will feature three different actors who are placed in different locations one in the classroom because the school setting is prominent to the student who subverts racial stereotypes by being a black student who manages to be an overachiever and the other actor being featured will be on the street getting stopped by another actor who is taking the form of a policeman  who stops him out of racial misconduct and my last location will be at the park where the two actors come together and I will incorporate a performance element where they dance in spite of defeating the policeman .I will incorporate a meta narrative in to show two different storylines to maintain interest throughout. I  will use long shots and closeups to make the actors facial expressions more comprehensible and make them understand the narrative better. I will also incorporate a slow-motion effect because it fits well with the song and narrative and it gives it the melancholic feel that I am aiming for. I have applied Todorov equilibrium theory to my music video as the state of harmony is the black student overachieving in class and then the involvement of the police officer disrupts the harmony by stopping and searching the black student and then the overachieving acts as the “hero” as prop states because they restore the equilibrium by saving the actor that is getting stopped and searched from the police by calling him out for his racial misconduct . I will use fast pace editing to give the narrative a sense of continuity so that the target audience will understand the storyline better. My use of diegetic sound in the music video where the actors are talking between themselves and the audience can’t hear their dialogue but can’t hear the actual music in a way gives out an enigma code which creates mystery because they target audience only know so much about the development of the narrative.

For my Film poster I put the artist J Cole on the cover because he is a well-known artist with a huge fan base which would attract more media attention. I would use bright colours such as lilac and neon in the subtitle when advertising the music video to make it stand out from everything else and catch the readers eye. Bright colours also convey a sense of jovial and are usually accustomed with happiness which would make the audience more adamant to watch the music video . I would also incorporate the pictures of the beats in the background to announce J Coles sponsorship with the beats company.

My music video subverts  traditional stereotypes because it incorporates hardworking , independent women who are overachieving at school and also helps the male actor in the music video reversing the roles making the male actor dependent. In the case of audience theories, I think my target audience particularly those of African origin will be able to develop personal relationships because they can relate to this racial misconduct based on their own experiences with police officers . Audience can also develop personal identity by seeing themselves reflected as the overachiever whose equilibrium is always distrupted by a  negative experience and can’t seem to break through the glass ceiling. It can also apply to all woman who may see themselves as independent and successful in the educational field.

I will promote my film and poster on twitter because it has the most socially aware users and J Cole has a strong fan base on there with a total of 1 million followers. The mode of retweet is also a fast-paced method for other fans to share it with more people because it is fast and easily accessible. I would use Warner Bros to distribute my film because they are best known for their arthouse films which is the structure I am basing my film on.
